ボランティアスタッフからのメッセージ　

現在まちにわ事務局で、ボランティアスタッフとして活躍中のMatthew Myles (マシューマイルズさん)からのメッセージを紹介します。

Hello everyone,
My name is Matthew Myles. I am studying Danchi as a graduate student and have started to volunteer at Machinwa. Aside from Danchi my hobbies include reading, running, and music.
When I first came to Japan nearly five years ago, I lived in a Danchi in Hyogo prefecture’s Nishinomiya city. I stayed there for three years and started to have an interest in Danchi. I felt like Danchi, more than other places I have lived in, were a place where people could easily come together to build a community.
In the US we don’t have Danchi like in Japan. Where I’m from most people live in single family homes and drive everywhere so you don’t often meet people in your neighborhood. For that reason, it can be hard to create a neighborhood like in hibarigaoka.
But in Danchi many people live near to one another and can build good relationships. Regardless of gender, age or nationality anyone can participate in a Danchi’s groups or activities, such as NPOs, neighborhood councils and events. This is another thing I find interesting about Danchi.
Moreover, when I think of Danchi I think of the word “mottanai.” It is hard to translate this word into English, so when I came to Japan I was introduced to this style of thinking. Danchi are housing complexes that already exist, so from that base sustainable housing for all can be treated. Hibarigaoka danchi is a famous example of this kind of renewal.
You may see me at hibarigaoka terrace or at an event. If we run into each other feel free to stop by and say hi. I would love to hear about your favorite place in the neighborhood.

ひばりが丘団地のみなさんこんにちは、
マイルズマシューと申します。五年前、アメリカのニュージャージー州から日本に来ました。団地はともかく、文学やランニングや音楽に興味があります。
去年の夏にだいがくのため、京都府からに東京都に引っ越してきました。
また大学院で団地を研究しておりますので、「まちにわ」でボランティアとして参加します。
日本に来てから3年ほど兵庫県西宮市の武庫川団地に住んでいました。そのときに、他の住宅街よりも団地のほうがお互いの住人が協力できることを見つけました。
団地の住宅システムは誰でも共生できるものなので、大事だと思います。もしかしたらアメリカにひばりが丘団地のような場所がないと思います。私の地元ではみんなは戸建ての家に住んでいて、車を使うので、近所の人に出会うことがありません。
ですが団地はみんな隣の部屋にいますので、住人同士でいい関係を作ることができます。
NPOやイベントに性別や年齢、国籍を問わず、誰でも関与できます。そのような多様性に興味があります。
なお団地と言えば「もったいない」という言葉を思い出します。もったいないは英語に訳しにくいですので、日本に来て初めて、そういう考え方を紹介されました。団地はもうある住宅インフラですので、その基盤を使ったら、皆はサステナブルな家を見つけられます。再生事業としてひばりが丘団地はとても有名だと思います。
